Pekanbaru, Riau, (Antarariau.com) - Riau police have named 66 suspects in bush fires that caused problem of haze of smoke disrupting flight schedules and causing health hazard.
Haze of smoke forced the closure of schools not only in Riau and neighboring provinces but also in neighboring countries.
Police have handled 44 cases of bush fires with 66 suspects including a corporation, Riau police chief spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Guntur Aryo Tejo said here on Tuesday.
The number of suspects could increase as there are a number of cases are still in the early phase of investigation, Guntur said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has passed order to put an end to the problem which has hit the region almost every year.
The president visited Riau last weekend to emphasized the seriousness of effort to prevent the repeat of the problem in the future.
The president outlined preventive measure by by order for a crackdown on illegal logging and illegal opening of plantations blamed mainly for the bush fires in Riau.
"I do not want to burden the next government with the same problem," Yudhoyono, who will end his presidential term this year, said.
