Pekanbaru, Riau, (Antarariau.com) - Some 172 passengers were evacuated to Dumai harbor, Riau Province, from a Malaysian ferry taking on water that served the Malacca-Dumai route on Thursday evening.
Malaysia Express ferry was off Babi Isle, Rupat sub-district, Bengkalis District, Riau Province, Kukuh Widodo, a spokesman of the Pekanbaru Search and Rescue (SAR) agency said here on Friday.
"All passengers, crew members and the skipper have been evacuated," Kukuh said.
The evacuation process involved several boats, including Indomal Express and Basarnas ships.
To prevent the ferry from sinking, the captain deliberately ran the passenger ferry aground on Rupat coast.
