UN Project Services Introduces Fire Disk System

Siak, Riau (Antarariau.com) - United Nations Office For Project Services (UNOPS) has introduced Early Warning System or Fire Disk System (FRS) for detecting and mapping a certain area to prevent peat land and forest fires.

"The early warning system or FRS is designed by the Centre for Climate Risk and Opportunity Management in Southeast Asia Pacific of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB CCROM SEAP)," Siak District Officer UNOPS Witman Gultom said here Wednesday.

He explained FRS is a computer-based system with spatial output designed by scientists from Bogor Agricultural Institute to prevent and handle forest and lands fires.

"FRS takes biophysical data such as weather patterns, precipitation and sea surface temperature, and put them in a computer system along with historical information about fires, lands uses, and social activities," Witman said.

The software system is believed to be able to make an early detection on forest and lands fire potentials, and predict disasters that may happen in the next 3 months.

Therefore, the technology helps governments and stakeholders in suppressing the number of forest and lands fires," he asserted.

"The early warning information is forwarded to the central, provincial and district/city governments so that they can plan preventive measures," Witman said.
