Pekanbaru, Riau (Antarariau.com) - Over 100 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran being accommodated in the open parking area of the immigration office in Pekanbaru, Riau, are voicing their grievances over the current state of affairs.
"We have been accommodated in the open parking area of the immigration office, and when it is hot, we feel the heat, and when it rains, we get drenched," Ali, one of the asylum seekers, stated here on Wednesday.
Ali said there were around 103 asylum seekers, including some 45 children in Pekanbaru, and some of them have been living there for two months, and some others for a month and a half.
"It remains uncertain how long we will be here, and perhaps for another three to five months, we do not know. We are also clueless on where we will go from here, for we have no other choice," Ali remarked.
In the meantime, spokesman of the Pekanbaru immigration office Pria Wibawa noted that the immigrants from these four countries were under scrutiny to ascertain whether they were asylum seekers.
"If it is true that they are asylum seekers, then we will coordinate it with the International Organization for Migration for a solution to their case," Wibawa said.
According to the spokesman, there are currently some shelters for almost 1,000 immigrants, and more than 100 others at the immigration parking area will be accommodated after those in the shelters reach their destination country.
