Pekanbaru, Riau (Antarariau.com) - The Riau provincial administration is expecting 15 thousand foreign tourists to visit throughout 2017 and another 20 thousand by 2019, a spokesman for the Riau Province, Erisman Yahya, said here, Friday.
He added that for many people Riau is more familiar as a region rich in natural resources, especially oil and gas.
"But other than that, people should also know that Riau has many attractive tourist destinations, such as the Bono Wave in Kampar River, which has a wave where once can surf like at sea," he said.
Riau also has a travel event called Pacu Jalur in Kuantan Singingi that has been held for hundreds of years and draws hundreds of thousands people.
"This event has even been held since the Dutch colonial era and has become a tradition in the Kuantan River," he said, adding that Riau also observes the Tour de Siak event.
"There is also the Palace of Siak and the Muara Takus temple in Kampar age, which is even older than the Borobudur temple," he said.
Erisman added that Riau is also blessed with natural beauty in the form of dozens of waterfalls scattered in various districts in Riau, one of which is Lubuk Bigau in Kampar, which is the highest waterfall in Sumatra.
